The Ruins of Myvolia

Jungle Nights PBP

Fort sun

The humid heat of the late summer day slowly turns to wet cool as the sun decends and the chirping of the insects replaces the colourfull business of the tropical birds. Fort Sun at night is a miggled mess of yellow torches and dark brown bodies entwined together like a living creature.

Sanbuun and his Rappid Water warriors have secured the Serpent Idol, covering it with cloth and mud they have locked it in a small wooden cage. They then transported the cage, with its contents, to the church where a group of four Lantern Knights, and four local warriors, alternately guard it—in the northeast tower.

Later in the evening, thick heavy drops of rain start to fall from the sky just as most torches are starting to be extinguished for the evening. A heavily armoured caravan enters Fort Sun with the standard of the Primate Joseph Cardel emblazoned on the side. In short order, the gates of the church are barred and locked and the Primate’s honour guard stands vigil outside the northeast tower preventing entry to all save the Council of the Sun. All is tense in the compound of the Vintarans.

The rest of the village, and sprawling refugee camps, settle into the normalcy of sleep under the canopy of jungle rain.

What do you do from early evening to the morning of the next day?

DM request*** Could you enter your current character info into the character section so I can make quick skill checks…thanks.

I spend a great deal of time sulking in my quarters, muttering about the incompetence of certain members of the local leadership and trying to figure out how I have been denied the glory and praise that I have so obviously earned.

But otherwise no action or inquires?

Jungle Nights PBP

I will approach the guards that returned with Prelate Vander, “Greetings brothers. It appears that you have ridden some distance and in great haste. What news do you have?”
I will butter them up and try to gather what info I can.

They seem uncomfortably tight lipped. They say they are under strict orders not to discuss current events with anyone. They do slip that they have been travelling for the greater part of two days and that they left from Fort Sol in a hurry. Otherwise they ask you to leave until they have been given clearance to speak freely.

I go to my hut and return with as many totems as I can carry, trying to find Lucius to get him to help me greet his friends and welcome them with tokens of friendship.

“Greetings, friend Lucius,” I say as I approach. “I see more of your metal cased friends have come with some haste and from some distance. Will you greet them with me?” I continue, holding out a totem for him and acknowledging my sack full of others.

“Perhaps we may learn some news from them…I feel the jungle is restless.”

You recognize most of the knights save for a couple and realize that the full Council of the Sun is meeting—including Primate Cardel who was absent from many of your meetings. The guards politely accept the totems but solemnly refuse entrance into what has become quite obviously an emergency meeting.

You are beginning to hear whispers of war to the north from people who would have no business knowing such matters.

Jungle Nights PBP

OOC (Out Of Character): Do these “whispers of war” have anything to do with a missing totem I might know something about?

Jungle Nights PBP

No mention of the totem. Nothing specific. More like the grissled old stable hand saying “Smells like war.” Youth and gossips in the streets muttering “Tidings like these always spell men in the grave” Those such things…no specifics.

Jungle Nights PBP

If no further information is forthcoming than I will stand restlessly by in my armour awaiting a summons or any other such event. The news of war has cheered me up considerably. If approached by any official I will jump at an opportunity to take on another mission.
When Sunbow approaches I greet him. “Good evening, Sunbow. I have spoken with the guards and their tongues are held firm by their oathes. Have you heard the rumours about town. It seems the dogs or war are shortly to be unleashed. I can feel a battle in my bones. Finally a chance to prove my mettle in open combat rather than skulking through the jungle as we have thus far been forced to do.”

Jungle Nights PBP

“You need a cup of tea,” I say, but think about sending for the crazy witch doctor or someone who can give him a sedative instead. He’s clearly out of his mind.

“You should calm yourself, friend. War is never a good thing.”

Jungle Nights PBP

“Yes, yes, war is bad and all that,” I respond distractedly while I tap my fingers on the hilt of my sword. “Have you seen Victor anywhere?”

Jungle Nights PBP

OOC I haven’t seen Sandy on here yet. What I will do is move onto the next post and if he wishes to comment on this thread still I will allow a small amount of retro-action…if need be. We had agreed to check daily…right? I mean I’m no slave driver…and I’m definitely not going to guarantee a new scene every day but I will try to at least check it. Or shall I take his silence the same way I take his silence at the table?

Jungle Nights PBP

OOC He’s probably lurking around here somewhere. You should give him a thief, then his silence would at least have a really nerve-racking effect for the rest of us.

And by the way, what have you got against slave drivers? They fill an important social role. After all how else will slaves get paired up with an abusive and tyrannical master if there isn’t someone to facilitate the human transaction?

Jungle Nights PBP

re: slavers. Okay, I fixed it. Just for you.

Jungle Nights PBP

OOC: oops i didn’t realize we had started, sorry I am having a pretty hellish week thus far, and have not been checking my internets. but now with a definite purpose…
IC: To Saboon: Perhaps you would allow me to acertain the safety of transporting this object? mere proximity to such objects could be a danger to the unaware and unprepared…

Jungle Nights PBP

If saboon is not swayed by my warnings I will make my self comfortable in some corner of the residnence and work on preparing a scroll… I tell him that if study is not practical now I will accompany him on his journey upriver and learn what I can about it on the way.

Jungle Nights PBP

Sanbuun won’t let you be a member of the honour guard…but he seems very interested in learning what the idol does…if it is dangerous…and what its powers are.

SANBUUN “If I waz to lat yoo ave sum time alone wit tha relic, wood you be able ta tell me whot it does? I don’t want none of yoor fancy mumbo…and I’m not payin ya a lick moor. But if, say, I gives ya acouple hours of time wit it—while under guard—wood you be able ta tell me whot it really does?”

Jungle Nights PBP

OOC: I was under the impression that we’d be checking in every day (and posting if we had something to say/do), but not that there would be a new scene daily…kind of expected each scene to last at least 2 or three days (especially at a once-a-day posting rate) and at most about a week. As GM, I say you move on whenever there’s a logical break or lull, just as you would in a tablegame, Dave-O. Your show, buddy.

Jungle Nights PBP

My thoughts as well. I just wanted to make sure Sandy didn’t actually look at the post rather than look at the post and have no comment. If the scene doesn’t motivate an action I’d like confirmation that there will be no action. And as it turns out Sandy has just had a crappy week and hasn’t got a chance to check here yet…so no harm no foul. Just trying to get a handle on this medium. I must say I like it: it gets me thinking about game stuff more often!
